Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, origin of the Ganges River

About Gangotri

Gangotri is a town and a Nagar Panchayat in Uttarkashi district, situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. The Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, is one of the four sites in the Chardham pilgrimage circuit. Located at an altitude of 3,100 meters, the temple marks the origin of the Ganges River. The area is known for its pristine natural beauty and spiritual significance.

The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya and closes on Diwali. The Bhagirathi River, which later becomes the Ganges, flows through this region. The journey to Gangotri offers stunning views of the Garhwal Himalayas and is considered one of the most scenic routes in the Chardham circuit.
